A STORY OF COMMITMENTS
It all started in 1984 when Georges MOARII entered the Institute for the Valorization of Aquaculture and Marine Activities (EVAAM) as a senior technician in charge of tuna research programs.
During his 9 years in this public institute, he sailed on Polynesian waters on the Territory research vessel « Aorai » for exploratory trips, development of fishing techniques and training of fishermen in the islands.
An undeniable passion for fishing started which led to the beginning of this amazing journey.
The fishing activity began in 1993 with the construction of the first 24 meter frozen tuna vessel built locally by Le Chantier Naval du Pacifique Sud (CNPS). Since then, Georges has been captain and owner of frozen tuna vessels for 10 years and trained several of the current captains.
The Moarii family, founders of Ocean Products Tahiti and the Georges Moarii fleet, has been in the fishing business since 1993 in French Polynesia.
In April 2009, the family strengthens its position with the creation of the fish processing and trading company OCEAN PRODUCTS TAHITI led by Christine MOARII, Georges’ wife.
At the same time, the company’s fleet transitions from frozen to fresh fishery.
The group strives to develop Japanese « ikejime » killing techniques while complying to the European health regulations.
In just a few years, Ocean Products Tahiti has become a major Polynesian fish supplier not only locally but also internationally with shipments going to various destinations.
As a result, the fish carefully selected by Ocean Products Tahiti is used by some of the most prestigious tables of restaurants in Tahiti and its islands and also in Los Angeles, New York, Tokyo, Auckland and Paris.
FRENCH POLYNESIA
French Polynesia is a French overseas territory.
French Polynesia is composed of 118 islands spread over an area as large as Europe, and has an Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) of approximately 5.5 million km2 which represents 40% of the entire French EEZ.
Located in the middle of the South Pacific Ocean, at the antipodes of France, French Polynesia favors endogenous development and preservation of its environment.
Concerning fishing, most of the vessels are built by one of the local shipyards and operated by Polynesian crews. Foreign boat fishing is prohibited, as well as purse seine or trawler vessels.
The whole EEZ is a protected sanctuary for turtles, sharks and marine mammals.
This strong commitment to a sustainable fishery is reflected today
through a governance policy that balances between:
– social, with the establishment of a social protection system for its fishermen,
– economic through a proactive policy that supports its local businesses
– environmental with the project of creating the largest Managed marine Area of the World « Tai Nui Atea » or « The Vast Ocean ».
The blue economy is at the center of attention as it is a source of innovation and inspiration
which provides through its wealth an ocean of opportunities.
